Job Description

The purpose of the job is to provide support to the Conservation Manager (On Reserve) in providing strategic leadership, oversight, and management to Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve, in a manner to conserve, enhance and restore biodiversity resilience, manage sustainable and responsible access and land use, and mitigate risk.

 

 

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

 

PROTECTED AREA MANAGEMENT

 

Implement Protected Area Management Plan Actions for the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve

Management Effective Tracking Tool (METT) targets must be implemented, monitored and reported on

Ecological Matrices (Eco-Matrix) actions must be compiled, co-ordinated and implemented

Provide Operational leadership in implementing the Annual Performance Plan (APP) Targets for the Reserve

Lead ranger team with Conservation tasks including prevention of Biodiversity Loss, Rehabilitation and Restoration

Maintenance of Reserve Infrastructure

 

 

INTERGRATED CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT

 

Lead the team in the preparation of the Integrated Work Plans (IWP) and Integrated Annual Plan of Operations (IAPO)

Operational Management and Board and EPWP Teams to ensure implementation of IAPO

Monitoring and Reporting on IAPO performance monthly

Fire Suppression duties in line with Protocols

Maintenance of Firebreaks and management of associated teams

Mapping and Planning associated with Firebreaks, Fires & Eco-Sensitive hotspots

Planning for fire audits and implementation of key actions

Timeous Submission of Fire Reports

Assist Conservation Manager to maintain key partnerships related to Integrated Catchment Management for Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve

Planning and implementation of alien clearing density verifications, clearing projects and final inspections

 

 

MANAGEMENT OF THE BIODIVERSITY ECONOMY, SUSTAINABLE AND RESPONSIBLE ACCESS AND LAND USE

 

Management of the Reserve Extended Public Works Program (EPWP) team

Assist Conservation Manager and Tourism Officer with Tourism Facility Maintenance and Management

Assist Conservation Manager and Tourism Officer with Tourism & Non-Tourism Access Management

Liaison with Tourism Officer in terms of Tourism Needs for the Reserve

 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT

 

Implement compliance plan actions for the Reserve

Ensure adequate planning for, implementation and reporting of patrols, inspections, law enforcement activities to mitigate against illegal activities in the Reserve

Provide support to the Conservation Manager Off Reserve with Sustainable Harvesting Permit inspections

Support Conservation Manager On Reserve in terms of monitoring and research initiatives

Assist with Damage Causing Animal Control in line with legislation and protocols

Assist Conservation Manager and Stakeholder Engagement Officer with Environmental Awareness and Capacity building related to threats facing the Reserve

 

 

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE, FINANCE, ADMINISTRATION, HUMAN RESOURCES, OHS

 

Assist Conservation Manager to ensure compliance with CapeNature Policies and Procedures within Operational Team

Assist Conservation Manager to ensure adequate OHS management on the Reserve

Assist Conservation Manager to identify key risks and threats within the Reserve Operations

Assist Conservation Manager in responding to Emergencies and Rescue operations

Provide input to reserve budget planning and spending

Ensure financial administration is in accordance with Legislation, Policies and Procedures

Ensure all administration, forms, reports, tracking tools are completed in accordance to the standard and deadlines set.

Ensure adequate management of sub-ordinates, including associated staff meetings, work planning, discipline management, personal development plans, performance management, attendance and leave management

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

National Diploma in Nature Conservation or Environmental Management.

At least three years appropriate low to mid-level management experience (Biodiversity Conservation, Integrated Catchment, Monitoring, Staff Management)

Working knowledge of Conservation Compliance (Law Enforcement)

Strong computer literacy (Microsoft 365 package)

Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape

Good written and verbal communication skills

A valid driver’s licence and experience in 4x4 driving

Training and experience in Firefighting

 

 

ADDED ADVANTAGE AND COMPETENCIES

 

B Tech in Nature Conservation / Environmental Management

Peace Officer or EMI certification

Fire arm competency

QGIS (or equivalent mapping skills)

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

 

Willingness and availability to work irregular hours, weekends and perform stand by duties

Required to live on the reserve in remote area

Working in natural mountainous terrain with adverse weather conditions

Physical fitness to undertake patrols, inspections, firefighting tasks

No criminal record
