A vacancy has arisen for a Maintenance Supervisor at Kirkwood Care Centre reporting to the hospital manager (Life Esidimeni Kirkwood Care Centre). The successful candidate will be responsible for meeting the needs of the internal and external customers through the execution of Life Healthcare strategic and operational objectives in facility maintenance, technical support, legislative compliance, adherence to company policies and procedures.


Critical Outputs

Effective hospital operations management through:


Responsible for continuous performance, improvement, assurance and quality management of Occupational Health and Safety within the facility perimeter is managed as per the OSH Act No. 85 of 1993 regulations.

Drive and ensure emergency preparedness

Responsible for implementing and enforcing LHC policies and procedures.

Recruit & retain existing employees, assign, direct and evaluate their work. Oversee the development and

maintenance of staff competence according to the LHC policies and procedures.

Management of engineering department which includes strategic people management, personnel utilisation,

personnel efficiencies, orientation and performance reviews (JPM).

Responsible for facilitating the management of land, buildings and equipment maintenance.

Responsible for ensuring those systems are in place to control and manage maintenance such as

functionality of planned/preventive maintenance programmes, job cards and call out systems.

Ensure service reports and records sheets of major equipment, breakdown and legal requirements are

completed, recorded and archived as pre company policy and various laws.

Direct and control the engineering of water control, energy saving and all sustainable projects.

Identify, recognise and motivate the need and feasibility for capital upgrades, improvements and


Financial control of the capital and operational budget. Prepare and manage budgets, bids, and contracts

and direct the negotiations of external service provider workflow.

Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing reports, enforcing rules and making

decisions about the purchase of goods and services. Present and motivate proposals, reports and findings

to Hospital Manager, Engineering Manager, Regional Manager and strategic partners.

Consult or negotiate with external professional teams, specialist contractors and the Engineering

department to assist with preparing projects or work specifications and scope.

Plan, direct, and co-ordinate survey work with relevant staff members, e.g. nurse manager, quality

manager, etc.

Management of on-site contractors and ensure that all projects are completed on time, according to

specifications, within budget and safely.

Ensure variations on projects are managed as per the LHC policies and procedures.

Maintenance of client service principles to ensure client expectations are met. Conduct customer satisfaction

surveys are conducted on a regular basis and ensure requirements/complaints are identified, investigated

and managed appropriately.

Effective relationship building with internal and external stakeholders, e.g. Local Municipality, Electricity,

Water, etc.

Demonstrating visible leadership in respect of LHC values, operating model and strategy

Effective governance and risk management by:


Ensuring and driving optimal management of business governance to achieve sound business ethics, risk management and control with appropriate transparency and control





Minimum N6 Certificate in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical and Civil)

Above academic qualification should be accompanied by a minimum of 3 years in operations or engineering

maintenance in a facility recognised by the department of labour as an operating factory, or practical

experience in a hospital or similar environment in engineering department is essential.

Skills required include, good management skills, contract management skills and building project management skills.

Computer proficiency: MS Office, Outlook, on an asset management system, report-writing skills and ability to create excel spread sheets.

Excellent communication skills

Current driver’s licence.
