CapeNature seeks to appoint a dynamic individual to provide a professional GIS support service.
The Graduate Intern GIS Technologist forms part of the Biodiversity Capabilities team and will bolster GIS knowledge and data management as well as improve datasets on fire and invasive alien management for the Operations Directorate to advance decision making.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
KRA 1: Ensure GIS datasets are compliant with legislation and CapeNature’s policies and SOPs.
Assist with the collection and verification of spatial data.
Provide necessary real-time data and mapping during active fire suppression and sit in as part of the Incident Management Team during fires.
KRA 2: Convert historical data into useable structured databases
Act a conduit to work with FPAs, District Municipalities and PDM on standardising mapping and other tools to ensure a united understanding of fire maps, fire breaks, veld age, fire frequency, and invasive alien densities.
Converting raw field data received from operations into structured, usable databases,
KRA 3: Contribute to Annual technical reports and 5-year reports
Contribute to the annual State of Conservation Report, Annual Fire Report and Annual Invasive Species Report
Contribute to the CapeNature, Five-yearly Catchment to Coast Strategy (Due 2027) through the compilation of maps, analysis, and statistics as well as the yearly C2C reports.
participate in internal capability development interventions and in-house training
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a South African citizen
Young unemployed professional
A Natural Science degree in the field of Geomatics, Environmental Management, Conservation Science, Ecological Science, Biological Science or Zoological Science. NQF 7 or higher.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Demonstrable working knowledge of ArcGIS & QGIS software.
Knowledge of cartography, map reading, geometry and mathematics.
Experience and understanding of the use of GPS technology.
No criminal record

Good computer literacy, including the MSOffice suite, digital file management and the ability to operate the relevant GIS software efficiently.
Ability to identify, analyse and resolve problems applicable to GIS hardware and software.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other GIS users, including colleagues, peers and professional associations.
A valid Code EB08 drivers license.
