Description

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is looking for an accomplished manager
and strategic leader to serve as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning
The incumbent will provide strategic leadership to the entire academic project of the University. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring, amongst others, that the academic function of the university is technology-driven and fit for the purpose of curbing the dropout rate while producing competitive and excellent success rates and throughput
rates.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning is responsible, among others, for
the provision of strategic and operational leadership to the Faculties, Executive
Deaneries, the University’s Campuses, Campus Rectorates, as well as strategic entities such as the Tshwane School for Business & Society (TSB), Higher Education Development & Support (HEDS) and the TUT Confucius Institute.
The role further provides expert advice to Executive Management, Senate, and Council on matters pertaining to educational innovation to drive smart campus.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATION
• A relevant PhD/ Doctorate Degree (NQF 10)

EXPERIENCE
• 5 - 10 years of relevant experience in management in line with the Industry
Standards.
• A sound, track record as an academic at the level of Professor in line with TUT
requirements for professors.
• Academic teaching experience with evidence of excellence in teaching and
research.
• A successful track record in devising and implementing strategic change and
growth, as well as driving organisational effectiveness.
• A demonstrated record of leadership and management capabilities, having
provided leadership to academics, policy makers, community leaders and leaders
of the private sector (National and International).
• A distinguished research and scholarship of teaching background, having
impacted positively on institutional and/or national policies, as well as a significant
publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• A proven record in designing capacity building programmes aimed specifically at
producing a new generation of academics and a firm grasp of solutions needed for
the retention of young and established academics within the University
• Ability and experience in the development and implementation of policy
• Evidence of successful networking and collaboration with external partners
germane to the higher education sector*
• A track record of personal excellence in leading and managing a large and diverse
staff complement
• Strategic thinking, visionary leadership, and commitment to the university’s
strategic goals
• Skills in managing change and navigating different cultural and political
environments effectively
• Experience in driving academic transformation
• Evidence of familiarity with Academic Ratings

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ATTRIBUTES

Knowledge:
• Knowledge and understanding of the Higher Education Act, University Statutes
and Rules

• Demonstrated knowledge of all laws, regulations and policies
• Excellent knowledge and understanding of the academic
research environment and current issues in research
administration, policy and funding
• A thorough knowledge of South Africa’s science and
technology systems, particularly the role of universities in the creation of
knowledge related to development imperatives confronting South Africa
• Familiarity with research ethics, intellectual property, and the academic funding
landscape
• Knowledge of continuous quality improvement, integrated business
management, and financial literacy
Skills:
• Excellent project management skills with strong evidence of successful large
scale project delivery
• Strong leadership skills, with the ability to strategize and communicate effectively
• Exhibits effective decision-making, sound judgement and conceptual thinking
• Skilled at facilitating change and imparting impact and influence
• Proficient in problem-solving, project planning, and managing stakeholder
relationships
• Expertise in people, team and resource management
