Primate Unit & Delft Animal Centre (PUDAC) constitutes a team of pre-clinical scientists, laboratory animal technologists and research technicians. Our core business is to produce new knowledge and to provide pre-clinical and vaccine development research support, animal models and animal management services for biomedical research.

PUDAC seeks to appoint a highly self-motivated and suitably qualified In Vivo Research Technologist (Seasoned Level) to provide laboratory animal technical services. This position requires the successful candidate to provide high-quality care and husbandry for research animals and to support scientific staff in maintaining ethical, humane, and compliant laboratory animal research environments in accordance with institutional policies and animal welfare regulations. The outcome of these duties is to provide animal care (non-human primates, rodents and horses), environmental enrichment and research support for preclinical studies. This also includes record keeping, administration of substances and collection of body fluids.

Responsibilities:

Conduct common procedures on animals for studies, including collecting body fluids and administering substances via multiple routes.
Collect and capture TB testing records, animal pedigree records, breeding records.
Handling and manual restraint of more than one species (rodents, non-human primates)
Monitoring the effect of administered substance.
Assist with blood sampling procedure in horses.
Provide technical assistance to students.
Ensure quality and reliable data & records with few or no mistakes.
Manage and keep records of lab consumables and inventory stock levels.
Providing care and maintenance of animals during and after working hours.
Maintain acceptable housing and environmental conditions with suitable, species-specific enrichments.
Monitoring animal health (TB testing on animals, health/behavioral checks, report disease symptoms, early intervention and minor treatment of injuries, and techniques pertaining to prevention of zoonoses and infectious diseases).
Adhere to PUDAC SOP’s and MRC ECRA requirements and OHS with minimum or no deviations.

Remuneration: R 344 754.00 per annum (CTC)

Job Requirements

CoreRequirements:

3 Year Diploma in Animal Science & Technology (IAT- Level 3)/Laboratory Animal Technology or Veterinary Nursing, Animal Health Technology
Registered with the SA Veterinary Council
3 Years’ experience in lab animal housing and care or exposure to veterinary environment
Willingness to work in a research laboratory animal facility and follow strict ethical and biosafety guidelines.
Experience maintaining accurate records of animal care, breeding, and facility activities.
Experience working in a controlled research environment, following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Ability to work within a team.
Willingness to work after hours and over weekends or public holidays.
Willingness to undergo a health assessment including TB testing.
Computer literate (Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word)

Advantageous:

2-3 Years experience in lab animal environment housing non-human primates.
Knowledge of animal physiology, anatomy and basic veterinary procedures, basic lab activities
Experience with breeding colonies, health monitoring, and supporting research procedures.
Familiarity with record keeping and maintaining facility logs.
Code 08 manual Driver’s license
