About the Job

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Resource Rights & Litigation Attorney will play a key role in advancing the organisation’s legal support and advocacy work across Africa. The role combines strategic litigation, legal advice, programme implementation and stakeholder engagement, with a particular focus on supporting Indigenous Peoples and local communities to protect their rights, lands and natural resources. The successful candidate will work closely with community partners, legal practitioners and civil society organisations, while contributing to fundraising, communications and broader advocacy initiatives that promote environmental justice and community-led conservation.

Key Responsibilities

Manage implementation of ACRRA’S Resource Rights Program with support of its Legal Fellow, across South Africa, Namibia, Botswana & Zimbabwe.

Legal and Technical support to especially Indigenous communities.

Support to Managing Director.

Work at the interface between ACRRA & Peace Center (pro bono law clinic) partnership and the community legal cases.

Provide Legal advice to communities.

Building ACRRA’s network of lawyers & communities across Africa.

Growing ACRRA’s Legal Fund for solidarity with communities struggles.

Represent ACRRA at international, regional and national foras advocating for community-led conservation and resource rights struggles.

Support to its Fundraising and donor reporting.

Supporting strategic communication efforts promoting Indigenous Peoples Resource Rights.

Requirements

Admitted attorney with High Court Right of Appearance.

Minimum 3–5 years of litigation experience.

Proficient in more than one language.

Human rights and/ or environmental, conservation background.

Written and verbal communication.

Time management and organisation.

Administration and attention to detail.

Analytical and critical thinking.

Use initiative and work well in high-pressure situations.

Comfortable working in a small team and is flexible.

Apply sound judgement.

Willing to go the extra mile.

Willing to grow and expand into new frontiers.

Available for local and international travel.

Sensitive to the struggles and lived experiences of vulnerable communities.

Lawyers with Indigenous Peoples rights experience is an advantage.
