Description

The Faculty of Economics and Finance invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the permanent position of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics. The position is based at the Ga-Rankuwa Campus.

INSTRUCTIONS: Applicants are required to submit, together with the CVs, a fully completed standardized application form available from the university intranet as well as recently certified copies of qualifications, Identity Document and completed scoresheet (Annexure B). Failure to comply with this instruction will disqualify the candidate. Further note that candidates may be expected to make a presentation or undergo competency testing.

Critical Performance Areas
• Lead the development, review, and enhancement of postgraduate curricula for the Master’s in Economics and Master’s in Economics of Innovation, ensuring alignment with contemporary economic theory, innovation systems, and policy relevance.
• Deliver advanced postgraduate lectures in areas such as advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, innovation economics, industrial policy, technology and economic development, and knowledge economies.
• Conduct high-impact research in Economics, with a strong focus on innovation, technology diffusion, economic development, productivity, and policy analysis, and publish in accredited, high-quality journals.
• Supervise Master’s and Doctoral research projects, particularly in innovation systems, economic transformation, industrial dynamics, and applied econometrics, ensuring timely completion and high academic standards.
• Design and coordinate postgraduate modules that integrate theoretical frameworks with empirical analysis, including the use of econometric and data analysis tools (e.g., Stata, R, or EViews).

• Foster interdisciplinary collaboration within the areas of innovation studies, entrepreneurship, industrial economics, and public policy, contributing to programme growth and relevance.
• Facilitate student engagement in applied research, policy analysis, and innovation ecosystems, including partnerships with industry, government, and research institutions.
• Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to deliver high-quality postgraduate teaching in blended and online learning environments, incorporating interactive and research-led pedagogies.
• Provide academic leadership in postgraduate teaching, including curriculum coordination, quality assurance, and the mentoring of junior academic staff.
• Contribute significantly to the research output, postgraduate throughput, and academic reputation of the department and faculty.
• Perform administrative duties related to postgraduate teaching, supervision, assessment, and programme accreditation in line with institutional requirements.
• Participate in community engagement and policy outreach, particularly in areas related to innovation, economic development, and socio-economic transformation.
• Present postgraduate lectures, seminars, and supervision sessions, including evening, weekend, and virtual engagements, as required

Minimum Requirements

1. Academic qualifications
• PHD in Economics (NQF Level 10)

2. Experience
• Three years relevant experience at Lecturer level
• Proven track record of research publications in DHET-accredited journals, particularly in areas such as development, innovation, or applied economics.
• Demonstrated experience in supervising and mentoring postgraduate students, with evidence of successful Master’s and Doctoral completions.
• Strong capacity to teach advanced Economics modules at postgraduate level, including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Development Economics, and Economics of Innovation.
• Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills, with experience in delivering lectures, seminars, and academic workshops.
• Advanced quantitative and analytical expertise, including econometrics, statistics, and mathematical methods for economists.
• Proficiency in the use of econometric and statistical software such as EViews, STATA, SPSS, or similar tools.
• Experience in designing and coordinating postgraduate courses, short learning modules (SLPs) and contributing to curriculum development.
• Ability to integrate digital technologies and Learning Management Systems into teaching and research activities.

• Demonstrated experience in academic leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary engagement within teaching, research, and supervision contexts.

3. Registration with Professional Bodies
• The successful candidate will be expected to register with and maintain active membership in relevant national and/or international Economics professional bodies recognized by the Department.
• Evidence of current membership or eligibility for registration with recognized professional associations (e.g., Economic Society of South Africa or equivalent international bodies) will be an added advantage.
