A busy ophthalmology practice in the Northern Suburbs is seeking a qualified and experienced Optometrist or Ophthalmic Assistant to join our dynamic team.
The ideal candidate will have 2–7 years' experience in a similar environment, preferably within an ophthalmology
practice. We are looking for a professional, patient-focused individual with
strong clinical and administrative skills who thrives in a fast-paced practice.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to:
Performing auto-refractions and visual acuity assessments
Conducting OCT scans and visual field testing
Taking comprehensive patient histories and documenting clinical information accurately
Administering prescribed ophthalmic medications,including eye drops
Preparing patients for consultations, procedures, and theatre
Providing patient education on eye conditions, treatment plans, and post-operative care
Assisting with post-operative patient management and follow-up
Managing patient queries and coordinating follow-up appointments
Obtaining informed consent and ensuring all required documentation is completed
Processing medical aid authorisations and applying ICD-10 codes
Coordinating theatre bookings and liaising with hospitals, anaesthetists, and other service providers
Assisting with the preparation of medical reports and completion of medical questionnaires
Ordering intraocular lenses, consumables, and other medical supplies
Maintaining accurate patient records
Ensuring equipment is cleaned, sterilised, and maintained according to practice protocols
Upholding high standards of infection control, cleanliness, and organisation throughout the practice
Requirements
Qualification as an Optometrist or Ophthalmic Assistant
2–7 years' relevant clinical experience
Previous experience in an ophthalmology practice will be advantageous
Knowledge of medical aid processes, ICD-10 coding, and authorisations
Experience with theatre scheduling and patient coordination is beneficial
Computer literate
Fluent in both English and Afrikaans
Ability to work efficiently in a busy,high-pressure environment
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong organisational and administrative abilities
Excellent problem-solving skills
High level of accuracy and attention to detail
Compassionate, patient-centred approach
Professional, reliable, hardworking, and able to work effectively within a team
