About the Organisation

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary (EDS) provides a permanent home and loving care for rescued and abused donkeys. Crucial aspects of our work include outreach and advocacy. We present workshops for animal welfare professionals and owners, and communicate correct donkey welfare practices. EDS plays a prominent role as a centre of knowledge about donkeys in South Africa.

About the Job
EDS is seeking a passionate, strategic, and purpose-driven Sustainability and Advocacy Manager to lead and grow the Sanctuary's advocacy, fundraising, visitor experience, communications and public engagement initiatives. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced relationship builder and communicator to play a pivotal role in advancing donkey welfare, securing the organisation's long-term sustainability and strengthening its public profile. Working closely with the Executive Manager, the successful candidate will inspire support for the Sanctuary's mission while leading a dedicated team and developing meaningful partnerships with donors, communities, policymakers, and other animal welfare organisations.

Key Responsibilities
Advocacy

Accountable for: Staying up to date with developments affecting donkey welfare and ensuring that our advocacy work is appropriate.

Fundraising

Accountable for: Developing and managing a comprehensive fundraising and financial sustainability plan for the organisation.

Visitor Centre

Accountable for: The activities of the Visitor Centre including guiding, visitor and group visits, coffee shop profitability and the development of donkey-themed gift items.

Public Relations and Communications

Accountable for: All communications of and publicity for EDS including reports, newsletters, social media platforms, website design, public interviews and acting as the public face for EDS.

Work force Management

Accountable for: Supervising the actual staff involved in sustainability, trading activities, visitor guiding, advocacy and communications at EDS on a day-to-day basis.

Administration and Reporting

Accountable for: Accurate record keeping and reporting of Fundraising, Advocacy, Publicity and Communications (including various forms of Social Media and the Website).

Requirements

A tertiary qualification is preferred

5-10 years’ experience in a similar position and/or in the animal welfare sector, particularly with donkey welfare and equids, is advantageous

Expertise in motivating and leading a diverse group of staff.

Ability to cultivate trust with EDS staff, the Board and relevant organizations.

Proficiency in English and Afrikaans
