Role Overview
The Yard Manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of the waste sorting yard, ensuring:

Efficient waste flow (in → sorting → out)

High recovery of recyclables

Clean, safe, and compliant operations

Strong discipline and productivity of yard staff

This role directly impacts profitability (recovery rates + costs) and service delivery (turnaround time).

2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Yard Operations Management
Control vehicle flow (incoming/outgoing trucks, skips, wheelie bins)

Ensure quick offloading and turnaround times

Manage sorting lines / manual picking teams

Allocate waste streams:

Recyclables → stockpile / baling

Residual waste → landfill

Prevent bottlenecks in the yard

B. Recycling & Recovery Performance
Maximise recyclable recovery %

Identify valuable materials:

Cardboard

Plastic (PET, HDPE, LDPE)

Metals

Reduce contamination

Monitor and improve diversion from landfill

C. Staff Management
Supervise:

Sorters

General workers

Loaders / machine operators

Enforce:

Attendance & punctuality

Productivity targets

Discipline

Conduct daily toolbox talks

Train staff on:

Sorting standards

Safety procedures

D. Yard Cleanliness & Organisation
Maintain a clean, structured yard

Ensure:

Clear zones (incoming, sorting, stockpiles)

No mixed waste piles

Proper stacking of recyclables

Eliminate:

Litter

Spillage

Unsafe conditions

E. Health & Safety Compliance
Enforce PPE:

Gloves, boots, masks, reflective vests

Ensure safe operation of:

Loaders

Forklifts

Trucks

Manage:

Fire risks (especially paper/plastic)

Hazardous waste isolation

Report incidents immediately

Track:

Daily tonnage in/out

Recyclables recovered

Landfill volumes

Report:

Issues in operations

Staff performance

Equipment problems

Coordinate with:

Logistics (truck movements)

Sales (client requirements)
